License vs. Certificate: The Piece of Paper Couples Always Forget

You’ve picked the venue, the florist is on standby, and your playlist is perfection. But in the whirlwind of "I do" preparations, there is one boring-but-vital piece of paper that often causes a last-minute panic: the difference between your Marriage License and your Marriage Certificate.

In our decade of experience at Wilton Vida Ceremonies, we’ve seen that these two terms are often used interchangeably, but mistaking one for the other can lead to major headaches—especially when you’re trying to change your name on a passport for that honeymoon flight.

The Marriage License: Your "Permission Slip"

Think of the Marriage License as your legal permission to get married. In the State of Florida (and specifically here in Broward County), you must obtain this before your ceremony. You and your partner must visit the Clerk of the Courts in person to apply.

The Broward County Rules:

  • The Waiting Period: If you are a Florida resident, there is a mandatory 3-day waiting period from the day you apply until you can actually have your ceremony (unless you’ve completed a qualifying pre-marital course).

  • The Expiration: Once issued, the license is only valid for 60 days. If you don’t say "I do" within that window, you have to start the process over.

  • The Documentation: You’ll need valid government-issued IDs and, if either of you has been married before, the exact date the previous marriage ended.

The Marriage Certificate: Your "Receipt"

While the License is the permission to marry, the Marriage Certificate is the legal proof that you actually did it.

After your ceremony, your officiant (that’s us!) signs the license along with your witnesses. We then handle the filing with the Clerk’s office for you. Once the county records it, they issue the official Marriage Certificate. This is the document you’ll need for insurance, taxes, and the big one: The Name Change.

How Wilton Vida Simplifies the Stress

We know that the last thing you want to do after your wedding is worry about mail-in deadlines and courthouse filings. When you book with Wilton Vida Ceremonies, we take that burden off your plate. We ensure the license is executed perfectly and handled according to Florida law, so you can focus on the champagne toast.

Planning the Move to "Mr. & Mrs.", (or, Mr. & Mr.), (or, Ms. & Ms.)

Once that Certificate is in your hand, the real paperwork begins—especially for your travel documents. If you are planning an international honeymoon, remember that your name on your passport must match your ticket.

Our team at Wilton Vida Travel is here to guide you through the "Name Change" maze for your travel documents. From passport renewals to Global Entry updates, we ensure your first trip as a married couple is seamless.

The Golden Rule: If you haven’t updated your passport to your new married name yet, book your honeymoon tickets under your maiden name!
