What Is Sailor Loot? Virgin Voyages’ Onboard Credit Explained
Virgin Voyages does not call it onboard credit. They call it Sailor Loot, which is charming right up until the moment you realize you have been carrying a balance for four days without knowing what it covers or when it disappears. Most people learn the rules somewhere around day five, when it is too late to plan around them.
It is not complicated. It is specific. And the specifics are where the value either gets used or quietly evaporates.
What Sailor Loot Actually Is
Sailor Loot is general-purpose onboard credit. It sits on your shipboard account and can be applied to nearly anything you buy during the voyage — specialty dining, spa treatments at the Redemption Spa, premium beverages, shore excursions, retail, even the tattoo studio. That breadth is the point. It is the most flexible currency on the ship.
It is worth distinguishing it from a Bar Tab, which is the other credit you may see attached to your booking. A Bar Tab is narrow: drinks only. Sailor Loot is wide, and it will cover drinks too once a Bar Tab is exhausted. If you have both, spend the Bar Tab first. That sequencing alone recovers value for people who never think about it.
Where It Comes From
There is no single source, and the sources stack. Sailor Loot appears through the line’s own seasonal promotions, through the future-cruise deposit program for guests who book onboard, through offers attached to specific sailings, and through travel advisor offers — which is the one most travelers never see, because it does not exist on the consumer-facing booking path.
You can also buy it outright, though as of now there is no bonus for pre-purchasing, which makes that route far less interesting than the others.
The practical implication is that identical staterooms on identical sailings can carry materially different credit depending on how and through whom the booking was placed. That is not a loophole. It is simply how the distribution model works, and it is a reasonable argument for having someone check the stack before you deposit.
The Three Rules That Cost People Money
First, it activates only once you are onboard. You cannot spend Sailor Loot on anything purchased in advance — not a Bar Tab, not a pre-booked excursion, not an add-on package in the pre-cruise portal. Every pre-voyage purchase comes out of your own pocket, and the credit sits untouched until embarkation day. People routinely pre-buy exactly the things their credit was going to cover.
Second, it is use-it-or-lose-it. Unused Sailor Loot is not refunded and does not roll forward — not to a future sailing, and not even to the second leg of a back-to-back. Whatever is left when you walk down the gangway is gone.
Third, there is no cash-out. It can go toward casino play in some forms, but promotional credit generally has to be wagered before anything can be withdrawn, so treating the casino as an exit route is not a strategy.
The corollary to all three: check your balance on embarkation day, not on day five. Open the app or your cabin tablet, confirm the amount matches what your confirmation promised, and screenshot the confirmation before you sail. Missing credit can usually be added by Guest Services — but only while there is still voyage left to spend it in.
How to Spend It Well
Once you know it activates onboard and expires at the end, the strategy becomes obvious: deliberately leave the discretionary purchases for embarkation day and beyond. Book the spa treatment onboard rather than in the portal. Hold the specialty dinner reservations that carry a charge. Wait on the shore excursion if the itinerary allows it.
The single best value on these ships, in our experience and by fairly broad consensus among people who sail the line often, is an unlimited pass to the thermal suite. It is a meaningful outlay at single-visit prices and a much better proposition across a full voyage — and it is precisely the kind of purchase that credit was designed to absorb.
And plan the last day. A balance discovered on the final evening becomes a rushed retail purchase you did not want. A balance planned around becomes a treatment, a dinner, and a bottle to take home.
What We Do With It
This is exactly the sort of detail Wilton Vida Group handles as a matter of course. As a Travel Leaders Network affiliate we have visibility into promotional and advisor-side credit that does not appear on the public booking path, and we confirm in writing what is attached to your booking — the amount, the source, and the terms — so nothing depends on remembering a conversation.
We also flag the sequencing before you sail: what not to pre-purchase, what to hold, and what to verify on day one. Small things, but they are the difference between credit that gets used and credit that expires quietly in your folio.
Amounts and terms shift with each promotion and sailing, which is the honest reason to have someone watching it rather than guessing.
