What Is Sailor Loot? Virgin Voyages’ OBC Explained

Most people meet their onboard credit somewhere around day three. They tap the band for a spa treatment, glance at the app, and discover a balance they did not know they had — or worse, discover it is smaller than they were promised, on the morning the window to fix it has already closed. Virgin Voyages does not call this money onboard credit. It calls it Sailor Loot, and the name is the least confusing thing about it.

The Credit That Only Exists at Sea

Sailor Loot is a general-purpose credit that lives on your onboard account. It is not a drink package, it is not a discount, and it is not money in any sense you can walk off the ship with. It activates when you board and it disappears when you disembark. Unused Loot is not refunded, not rolled forward, and not transferable — not even between the two halves of a back-to-back sailing, which surprises more experienced cruisers than you would expect.

That single characteristic drives everything else. Because the credit is time-boxed to the voyage itself, its value depends entirely on whether you knew it was coming and planned around it. A Sailor who boards knowing they have three hundred dollars to place spends it deliberately. A Sailor who finds out on day three spends it in a hurry, usually on whatever is nearest.

Where It Comes From

There is no single source, and the sources stack. Seasonal booking promotions are the most common — the credit is attached to the fare at the time of booking and appears on your reservation. Advisors have access to their own allocations through supplier programs, which is a category of credit most travelers never see advertised because it is not advertised. And onboard, the line sells a future-voyage placeholder that bundles a fare discount with a further block of Loot for a sailing you have not chosen yet.

The stacking is where the real money sits. A promotional credit attached at booking, an advisor allocation applied on top, and a placeholder purchased on a prior sailing can arrive on the same reservation. They do not cancel one another out. But they also do not assemble themselves, and each one has its own conditions attached.

What It Actually Buys

Loot is deliberately broad. It covers premium beverages once any separate drink credit is exhausted, treatments at the spa, shore excursions booked through the app, retail, the tattoo studio, and — with some game-by-game restrictions — casino play. Effectively, if it is a purchase made onboard that is not already inside your fare, Loot will cover it.

The important exclusion is timing rather than category. Sailor Loot cannot be applied to anything bought before embarkation day. Book a shore excursion from your sofa three weeks out and it goes on your credit card. Book that same excursion from the app once the ship has sailed and it comes out of the Loot. Nothing about the excursion changes. Only the payment method does, and the difference is the entire balance.

The other thing worth knowing: the highest-value single purchase on most Virgin sailings is the unlimited thermal suite pass, which prices well against buying access day by day. If you intend to use the spa more than twice, that is where the arithmetic favors you.

The Rules That Cost People Money

Three habits protect the balance. Check it on embarkation day, not later — log into the app or the cabin tablet as soon as you are aboard and confirm the number matches your booking confirmation. Guest Services can add credits that failed to load, but the fix gets progressively harder as the voyage runs on, which is why day one matters and day five does not.

Second, hold your excursion bookings until you are onboard if you want Loot to cover them. Third, spend the remainder on the final morning. A retail purchase, a coffee, a last spa add-on — anything is better than letting it expire, which is simply handing the money back.

Where an Advisor Changes the Arithmetic

This is the part of cruise booking that rewards someone holding the ledger. Wilton Vida Group works through Travel Leaders Network, which gives us access to supplier promotions and credit allocations that are not published to the consumer-facing booking flow. More usefully, we track what was promised against what actually posts to your reservation — because a credit that never loads is indistinguishable, from the passenger’s seat, from a credit that was never offered.

We also plan the spend before you sail. Knowing your balance in advance turns Sailor Loot from a pleasant surprise into a line item you have already allocated: the spa pass, the two excursions you actually wanted, the dinner you would otherwise have skipped. That is a materially different voyage from the one where you discover the money on day three.
